Agriculture and Natural Resource Management

Educational Field Days and
demonstration trials were used to help Identify problems facing the
production of established crops (alfalfa, cotton, seed crops and
vegetables) and to determine appropriate solutions. This was
accomplished in cooperation with the Area Ag Agent, Eric Norton.

Health and Nutrition

Health and Nutrition
programming is combined with both of the above outlined Agriculture and
4-H Program areas. Any opportunity available is used to promote
healthier lifestyles and increased physical activity. The CSREES
Strategic Goal 4 reflects the current situation on CRIT in such a
perfect way that it is quoted here: "While food and nutrition
assistance programs have helped reduce nutritional deficiencies,
improving access to healthy and nutritious food for low income
Americans remains a challenge.

Conducting research on Native American Reservation lands demands a unique protocol that prospective researchers need to understand and respect in order to proceed in an ethical and culturally sensitive manner. First, and foremost, researchers must recognize that they are working on sovereign lands and that cultural and legal issues may be very different than that of their own upbringing and background.

Irrigation Water Measurement

Agriculture on the Colorado River Indian Reservation is
predominately flood irrigated with water delivered from the Colorado
River via an extensive irrigation ditch system that extends over
most of the irrigable lands.  In recent
years, it has become increasingly important to measure and account for
individual and total irrigation water use. 
Extension partnered with CRIT and the USDA Natural Resources
Conservation Service, Parker Valley Resource Conservation District, Bureau of
Reclamation, Bureau of Indian Affairs and FFA youth to construct an irrigation
