With the prevalence of diabetes in Native American people and obesity problems nationwide there is a need across the country and locally to increase availability of fresh, nutritious fruits and vegetables for families and communities. Pesticide applicator training to private and government applicators

One of the natural resource goals of the Confederated Salish and
Kootenai Tribes of the Flathead Indian Reservation (CSKT) is to control
noxious weeds on Indian lands. The tribes own and manage approximately
825,000 acres of land. Nearly 60% (495,000 acres) of that area is
infested with noxious weeds.

Education programs

Food safety education to Kicking Horse Job Corps (after receiving
ServSafe certification): Students between the ages of 15-19 enroll in
Kicking Horse Job Corps Center from around the U.S. on a weekly basis.
To help with the concern for a standard food safety course in the
culinary arts at the Job Corps, I began offering a quarterly class to
provide training in food safety, causes of food borne illness, control
of food through the flow of food, food safety, and helping them
understand Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) by
controlling time and temperature.

Mini Society: Youth education

After school program - Mini Society:
Eighteen students between 4th and 5th grade attended Mini Society. The
curriculum was developed by Marilyn L. Kourilsky and the Center for
Entrepreneurial Leadership Inc. for youth empowerment and self
sufficiency. Students learned business development, management,
competition, supply/demand, checking account operation, scarcity, and
advertising, as well as running town council meetings. Students created
their own flag and currency.

Master Food Preserver

MSU Flathead Reservation Extension Office partnered with MSU Lake County Extension to offer the first Master Food Preserver class in Montana in over 25 years.  With the increase in gardening comes the increased need for education in food safety and food preservation.  Master Food Preservers (MFP) serves to extend Extension's education programs in food safety and food preservation to adults and youth.  The MFP serves as a volunteer educator and resource person in the community to provide the public with research-based information from Montana State University (MSU).
