Creek Nation 4-H

Publication Year:
2008
Publication Type:
Program Highlight

The benefits of 4-H are well documented, these benefits include increased communication skills, positive self-image, more
effective inter-personnel skills and increased public service. These skills are typically those very skills Native American youth need improvement in. Making the benefits of 4-H available to Creek Youth and keeping older teens active in 4-H, in order to
take advantage of 4-H’s benefits, is the main focus of Creek Nation 4-H.

Summer Camp

Muscogee (Creek) Nation youth had the opportunity to attend a summer
camp that lasted for three days. The event took place on the Okmulgee
Career Tech Campus of Oklahoma State University. The camp activities
focused on Creek culture and history. Youth participated in workshops
on art, music, story telling, language, games, crafts and food that are
connected to their Native American culture. One evening the youth and
some adult volunteers held a stomp dance. An active game of stickball
entertained everyone on the second evening of the camp.

Environmental Education

Environmental education is a high priority for the Muscogee (Creek)
Nation. The Extension Educator provided hands-on educational
experiences for the youth within the boundaries of the Nation. The
youth gathered data from local water resources, learned about
preventing non-point source pollution and studied stream ecology.
Building and launching hydro-rockets capped off the water quality camp.

Revitalizing 4-H in Small Rural Schools

Helping small rural schools within the Muscogee (Creek) Nation
re-establish and revitalize their 4-H programs has been the goal of the
Extension Educator this past year. The focus has been placed on one
school in three different counties. These three counties have an 18%
Native American population. The percentage of students who are Creeks
is even higher. State 4-H Ambassadors provided workshops on 4-H
projects, entertained with games, and shared their 4-H story with the
youth.
